Geography is one of the fundamental sciences that explores complex issues of the interaction between society, economy, and the environment. In recent decades, integrative trends have become evident in geography. This is driven by various factors, including the greening and humanization of geography in response to the increasing impact of human activities on nature, the interdisciplinary nature of environmental impact assessments and projects, and the growing interest in studying global and regional changes in the natural environment and climate. Additionally, the emergence of geographic information systems, scientific principles of environmental management, and sustainable development have contributed to these trends. In the early 21st century, these tendencies further developed into major fundamental generalizations and applied developments.
Under the influence of these processes, Moscow University has developed a modern structure for geography as a science, consisting of fifteen specialized departments. Each of these departments is associated with specific general or specific sciences within the geographical field. Almost every modern department represents an established major scientific school, featuring prominent scholars from different generations.
