The Department of Cartography and Geoinformatics of the Faculty of Geography of Moscow State University is a major research center, with a leading position in Russian and world’s cartography. The department has established scientific laboratories of aerospace methods, automation in cartography, digital cartography and photogrammetry, and a center for GIS technologies.
The department is recognized in Russia as the leading scientific school of geographic cartography, the goal of which is to develop the theory of cartography as a science of cartographic modeling and knowledge of geosystems.
In 1990-2009, the department was headed by Honored Scientist of the Russian Federation, Doctor of Geography, Professor Alexander M. Berlyant. In June 2009, A.M. Berlyant retired.
Since July 2009, Professor Irina K. Lurie is the head of the Department of Cartography and Geoinformatics.
Graduates of the department are geographers-cartographers, specialists in the field of general, thematic, complex, systemic and aerospace mapping, cartographic research method, GIS and geoinformation mapping.
The direction «Cartography and Geoinformatics» is very popular among students of the faculty. Graduates of the department work in educational and scientific institutions (RAS, etc.), in production cartographic organizations, in commercial structures, in the Ministry of Defense, etc.
