Program description
Professional training of masters is aimed at the graduate’s application of fundamental knowledge to substantiate current scientific directions in the cryosphere sciences, management of scientific projects; possession of knowledge about the patterns of evolution of the cryosphere in time and space; application of fundamental knowledge about the properties of frozen rocks, underground and surface ice to solve scientific and applied problems of environmental management in the cryosphere. The graduate can conduct qualified permafrost-ecological assessments of northern territories and highlands, organize surveys and legal monitoring of geotechnical systems in the permafrost zone and mountains, as well as assess geoecological hazards and risks during the development of northern and highland territories in connection with the development of catastrophic and dangerous processes.
The content of the master's program pays special attention to the knowledge of field, remote sensing and analytical methods for studying permafrost and glacial processes, as well as modern methods of interpreting research results, their cartographic representation, geoinformation analysis and processing of remote sensing data for analyzing and modelling the state of environmental components.
Benefits of the program
The master's program is open at the only department in the world that trains professional permafrost scientists (cryolithologists), glaciologists and specialists in the field of studying the Earth's cryosphere. Specialists of this profile are in demand in our country, where 65% of the territory is occupied by permafrost, and the tops of the mountains are covered with numerous glaciers. Students will be able to take part in expeditionary research in the Arctic, including Yamal, Spitsbergen and Taimyr, the Caucasus Mountains, Altai, and Central Asia. The program allows you to gain knowledge and practical experience in studying the problems of geoecology of the Northern regions and highlands. The Master's program in Cryolithology and Glaciology is an excellent chance to gain new knowledge and specialty, meet wonderful people who are passionate about science, and continue their education in graduate school at the Faculty of Geography of Moscow State University.
